ETIAS vs EES
Two Systems. One Common Mistake.
Most travellers don’t know the difference – until they’re at the border. Here’s what you need to know before you fly.
What is ETIAS?
ETIAS is a travel authorisation – not a visa. It applies to travellers from visa-exempt countries visiting participating European nations for short stays. Applied for online before departure, ETIAS is linked electronically to your passport. Simple, digital, and required before you board. The projected launch of this initiative is the fourth quarter of 2026.
What is EES?
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is Europe’s new electronic border management system. It automatically records passport details, entry and exit dates, biometric data, and travel history at the border – replacing manual passport stamping across participating countries. This is relevant to all passport holders entering EU regions.

Why This Matters
Travellers frequently confuse ETIAS and EES – and having one does not replace the other. Depending on your passport and destination, you may still require traditional visa stickers, transit visas, eVisas, or additional entry documentation. Each requirement is independent. Each matters.
